Most gardens need extra topsoil. We aim for a depth of 100 to 150mm of good quality topsoil, which gives the grass roots proper room to settle in. Poor soil means a poor lawn, no matter how good the turf is. We level and grade carefully, leaving gentle falls away from buildings so water does not pool.
Before laying, the ground gets a final rake and a light consolidation. It should be firm enough to walk on without sinking, but not packed down hard.
